Abandoned School - A BPC Outing

Saturday, May 6, 2023

10 am - 2 pm

Shenandoah PA

This is an exciting opportunity to photograph a historic abandoned school in the coal region of Pennsylvania. This historic structure was built in 1917 and was used as a temporary hospital for victims of the 1918 flu epidemic prior to being utilized in its intended fashion as a school for the next almost 70 years. Attendees will have the opportunity to photograph all areas of the school, from the gymnasium and pool to the classrooms and beautifully decaying auditorium.

The school is approximately two hours from Silver Lake Nature Center (the exact location will be disclosed to attendees - feel free to contact me with any questions about distance, etc).  This outing has an additional cost of $25, which must be paid in advance of entry to the site (cash only & exact change, please). Please RSVP by return email or on the FB event by EOD Saturday, April 29th if you will be attending.

Please note that the structure is not heated or cooled, so dress in layers. Although rehabilitation efforts are occurring, the structure is still largely in a state of decay and so attendees should wear good shoes/boots and be prepared to encounter debris, etc. Wide angle to moderate telephoto lenses will be most useful, plus a macro lens if you are so inclined. Tripods are always highly recommended, although the structure is well-lit on bright days.

Please also note that the location of this workshop is private, and we will be entering as a group. The location MUST NOT be disclosed to friends/photo groups/social media/etc.
