BPC Presents Joe Edelman with "Exposure - What Really is ‘CORRECT Exposure’?"

Monday, January 8, 2024

Silver Lake Nature Center at 7 p.m.

BPC is proud to present Joe Edelman with "Exposure - What REALLY is 'Correct Exposure'?" Please note that Joe will be presenting in person at SLNC - We will provide a zoom link for those unable to attend in person.

Forget about the Exposure Triangle and Histograms! Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO are the three most crucial camera controls that every photographer needs to understand – but how do you determine the correct exposure to begin with?

Joe will walk you through correct exposure and what that really means in the age of digital technology. Instead of triangles and histograms, we will dig into the relationships between Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO so that you create more consistent exposures to obtain the highest possible image quality that your camera can deliver.

What you will learn:

- How to best determine “Correct Exposure.”
- The relationship between Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO.
- Why you need to FORGET the Exposure Triangle.
- Why you should ignore the Histogram.
- Exposing to the left or the right is NOT a technique. It is an occasional solution to a problem.
- . . .and much more!

Joe Edelman is an award-winning photographer, author, and photo educator.

His educational mission: "To help photographers to develop a solid understanding of the HOWS and WHYS behind creating great photographs."

Joe is honored to hold the title of Photographic Craftsman, a designation given to those who have met the standards of excellence set by the Professional Photographers of America in recognition of service to the photographic profession as an orator, author, and mentor.

He takes great pride in sharing his experience as the host of the weekly The LAST FRAME Live a 60-minute photography Livestream that appears on YouTube. His channel boasts 300 + videos viewed over 11.8 million times by more than 180,000 subscribers in 114 countries.

Joe has also earned a reputation as a lively and popular presenter at photography conferences and is frequently featured on major photography news websites and podcasts.

From his start as a newspaper photojournalist while still in high school to his work today photographing all types of people, his photographs have been published internationally in magazines like Maxim, Cosmopolitan, Get Fit, and Shape, to name but a few. He has been called upon to complete assignments for the New York Times and The Los Angeles Times and has serviced commercial advertising clients from all over the United States.

BPC presents Sandra Herber with "Storm Chasing Photography"

Monday, March 27, 2023

Silver Lake Nature Center - 7 pm

Sandra Herber is a librarian in Toronto, but she spends all her vacation time (and disposable income) on photography trips. She was born in South Africa, and has lived in Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and Malaysia. Her love of photography started in her teens when her mother gave her an old Pentax Spotmatic and her parents allowed her to set up a black and white darkroom in the basement where she developed film and printed a lot of pretty terrible pictures. She switched from film to digital in 2007 and is thrilled that her work has developed enough since those early days to have garnered awards in international competitions and to be featured in publications in print and online.

Back in 2017 she was bitten by the storm chasing bug and chased that year and the next. The pandemic interrupted her annual trips, but she intends to return to Tornado Alley this spring. In her presentation, Sandra will tell us about the good, the bad, and the ugly of storm chasing from the point of view of a photographer. She'll explain why, how, and when storms form on the plains of North America, what it's like to go storm chasing, and some of the challenges inherent in capturing storm images, She'll show us color and infrared images of supercells, lightning, and tornadoes that she captured while traveling with a storm chaser.

Please note that Sandra will be appearing virtually, but members are welcome to come to the Center and watch her presentation together.

Monday, February 27, 2023

Silver Lake Nature Center - 7pm

T.J. Thorne is an Oregon-based fine art landscape and nature photographer, who grew up in rural Southwestern Pennsylvania, where he first discovered his love of nature. He will show examples of photographs captured in such light and discuss his approach from a technical standpoint with in-field context. T.J. hopes that each attendee walks away with a fresh creative view and interpretation of the way light behaves during the middle of the day and the ways it can be used to create compelling and meaningful images. Approach, mindset, and exploration are the keys.

BPC Presents JC Carey with "From Fear to Flash"

Monday, January 09, 2023

Silver Lake Nature Center - 7pm

BPC is proud to present JC Carey from Westcott with "From Fear to Flash". JC is a lifetime image maker who, like many of us, was terrified of lighting until he was gifted a lighting class in 2007. He now lives by the mantra that you can have great light anytime, and he enjoys nothing more than sharing his knowledge.

In this presentation, JC will demystify lighting, distilling it into the simplest steps possible so that anyone with a basic understanding of camera functions can start producing more dynamic images immediately. With tips and tricks that can be used with any lights you add to your creative arsenal, JC will talk about the basics and dive into some more advanced topics. In three easy steps, JC will take you from fear to flash.

Please note that this presentation will feature a discussion portion, as well as a hands-on, mini-workshop. While the discussion will be available for viewing virtually, only in-person attendees will be able to participate in the hands-on portion of the meeting. Monday, November 28, 2022

BPC is proud to present Denise Silva with "Long Exposure Photography." Her presentation focuses on the techniques used to capture long exposure images and explores the artistic results of using long exposures to create unique imagery. She will cover the techniques and gear needed to shoot these types of images during the day, as well as how to capture images that take advantage of the time of day and available light. As a reminder to members, our 2023 annual print contest features a category requiring the showing of motion!

Denise’s interest in photography started when her grandmother would share images from her travels to Egypt and Africa for safari. Thirty-five years later, Denise was inspired to fully embrace photography and, more specifically travel photography, and Road Runner Photography Tours was born. Denise has been recognized as one of the Top 200 Women Photographers Who Inspire by Nature Photo Guides and has had multiple articles published in Extraordinary Vision (EV) Magazine, and is a featured artist in Breakthrough Photography’s Guide to Night Sky Photography. She has contributed multiple articles to websites and publications, and her images have been featured in Black & White Magazine and Lenswork.

Monday, October 24, 2022

BPC is proud to present Michael Mancuso with "Find Your Own Way". Please note that Michael will be appearing in person, but his presentation will be live-streamed over Zoom for any members who are unable to attend.

Hockey great Wayne Gretzky said something about being not where the puck is, but where the puck is going to be. Michael has adopted that philosophy in photography, spending 30 years doing full-time newspaper work, and learning to be ready when moments happen.

Although Michael has won numerous state and national awards, he considers his most important awards the letters from people telling him something he's captured has made a positive impact or is something they will treasure - something life-affirming. Michael's focus is always on the next picture, and he's always learning.

Chip Cain with "Abstract Photography: Rarely Accidental"

Monday, May 9, 2022

Between 1995 and 2000, C.R. Cain, "Chip" to those who know him, was the editor and publisher of the poetry magazine, Beauty for Ashes Poetry Review, an experience which helped him hone his ability to see his own photographic work with a critical eye. Chip continues to improve his skills, with an eye toward the creative rather than technical. In addition to other awards and honors, in 2011 and 2013, Chip's work was accepted in the the Art of the State exhibition at the Pennsylvania State Museum, and he has twice been selected as an Olympus InVision Pennsylvania Photographer.

In 2011, Chip completed a six-week trip traveling across the US, visiting many National Parks. He finds great joy in encouraging other photographers through workshops and speaking engagements.

Arik Gorban with "Creating a Personal Photography Project"

April 11, 2022

BPC is proud to present member Arik Gorban with "Creating a Personal Photography Project" - This presentation promises to be particularly inspiring in light of our own personal projects we will be creating and sharing later this year!

Per Arik, one of the best ways to get creative, develop your photography, and share your pictures is by working on a personal photography project. It’s a great way to keep yourself inspired and produce pictures that express your interpretation of the scenes and subjects that you’re passionate about. Unlike photographing and sharing individual images, a project allows you to create a consistent body of work that builds up an idea or a story.
In this presentation, Arik discusses the elements of a photography project and how to embark on one, whether it’s a day-long project or one that takes weeks or months to complete. The presentation covers the steps from ideation all the way to project completion with a collection of images that can be used in a book, a presentation, and/or a photo exhibit. Arik shares the actual project plans of two of his photography projects and discusses how the plans evolved from the initial ideas to detailed project definitions, once each project started.

Sara Ascalon with "Creativity: A Conversation with Yourself"

March 14, 2022

BPC is proud to present Sara Ascalon with "Creativity: A Conversation with Yourself." Humans are innately creative creatures. For many, that creativity is freely expressed. For others, that expression is shackled by repression. Learn how to tap into the creative energy within you and experience the joy of letting go and sharing your vision with others.

“What is it like being inside that head of yours?” Sara has always had a slightly off-beat way of looking at the world and has been asked that question many times over. But how do you respond to something like that? After decades of searching, she found her answer in photography.

Photography allows Sara to reproduce her vision in a shareable, accessible form. Whether it’s the things she sees with her eyes or her mind, she can capture a moment, a view, or a flight of fancy and relive it with those who honor her by coming along for the ride. From the things you see every day and tend to overlook, to the absolutely extraordinary, it’s a strange and wonderful world.

Sara seeks to share that wonder – real and imagined – in her images and inspire and embolden her students to unleash their own creativity and do the same.

Sara is a former creative marketer and New Yorker who became a statistic in the economic downturn of 2008. With the loss of her career came a loss of purpose and identity and a relocation to South Jersey. She picked up photography as a pastime and found that it quickly became an obsession. Photography became her redemption during the rebuilding. It gave her a creative outlet and opened up new social and professional opportunities. A few short years later and she is now a photography and post-processing educator, frequent exhibitor, the recipient of numerous local, national and international awards, and President of the South Jersey Camera Club.

Mike Moats is an international award-winning full-time pro macro photographer from Michigan. He is a Tamron Image Master, Vanguard Pro, and his articles and images have been published in many photo magazines for over 16 years. "Capturing Motion" with Betsy Wilson

January 24, 2022

BPC proudly presents Betsy Wilson with "Capturing Motion." In this presentation, Betsy will explore the world of motion photography through her unique perspective. A combination of traditional techniques of controlling shutter speed with some non-traditional concepts using camera motion and light-painting, Betsy's images will inform and inspire us to try new ideas. Using your camera to capture motion in ways beyond what we see with our eyes results in endless creative possibilities.

Betsy began learning photography after retiring from a career as a newspaper publisher. Her husband, Jim, gave her his hand-me-down camera and a lot of encouragement, and she has never looked back. Her passion for photography includes a wide variety of types including macro, landscape, and nature photography. In addition to being honored with the Photographer of the Year Award at the Chester County Camera Club in Pennsylvania, she has received numerous recognitions for her artistic photography, including a Silver Medal awarded at the Wilmington International Exhibition of Photography, and First Place Award in Photography at the Philadelphia Flower Show. Betsy is an active member of the Chester County Camera Club, and has given numerous presentations and led workshops for area camera clubs.

Rich Lewis with "Attitude, Inspiration, and Composition"

January 10, 2022

BPC proudly presents member Richard Lewis with "Attitude, Inspiration, and Composition. A No-BS Approach to Photography." Rich will be appearing in person and his presentation will be live-streamed for any members who are unable to attend in person. At our presenter's request, members who come to the Center are asked to please wear a mask.

Rich has been a professional and fine art photographer since the 1970s with a passion for landscapes, especially the New Jersey Pine Barrens, abandoned buildings, and interesting people. He uses both a professional digital camera and an iPhone to create his work.

Rich’s inspiration comes from landscape painters, and he has developed a style he calls "Painting with a Camera”. This involves equal effort in both creating and post-processing an image.

Sterling E. Stevens with "Architecture: Studying our Built Surroundings"

December 13, 2021

BPC proudly presents Sterling E. Stevens with "Architecture: Studying our Built Surroundings". Within five years of joining a photography club, Sterling became a published, award-winning fine art photographer on the precipice of leaving his design career. He'll share his journey and influences, from point-and-shoot pictures to art photography studying our built surroundings, including the desolation of the rural condition, the quiet disintegration of abandoned buildings, the dissection of the urban environment, and analyzing architecture. Sterling will also discuss his transition from art to commercial photography as an independent architectural photographer.

Sterling, a New Jersey native, changed careers from practicing architecture to becoming an award-winning fine artist and successful professional photographer. Curiosity for photography emerged during his formal design studies in Texas and North Carolina. A trained aesthetic sensibility, acute empathy for his surroundings, and unadulterated joy of the still image contributed to his passion for visually translating the built environment. By Ray Hennessy

Ray Hennessy with "Planning a Wildlife Shot"

November 8, 2021

BPC proudly presents Ray Hennessy with "Planning a Wildlife Shot". Most of the best wildlife photos don't just happen. Often hours, weeks, months, and even years go into planning and executing what is necessary to be in the right place at the right time to capture an amazing wildlife photo. In this presentation, Ray will discuss some of the planning techniques he thinks about on almost every shoot, as well as the more specific planning that goes into capturing a certain species or shot. He'll share some examples of photos that resulted from this detailed planning and show how doing the work in advance can help you get more consistent and better results in your wildlife photography.

Ray's fascination with photography started in 2007. In the years since, Ray's love of wildlife photography, with a focus on birds, transitioned from a passionate hobby to a career. He spends much of his free time in natural areas searching for birds and any other wildlife that comes along. Ray concentrates on using creative natural lighting and interesting compositions to capture unique images of common and rare wildlife. His favorite style is a more scenic photo that includes some of the habitats wildlife lives in. Ray has received multiple awards - including the Audubon Top 100 in 2018 and 2019 - and his work has appeared in numerous publications.

Matt Emmett with "Rediscovering Our Forgotten Heritage"

August 23, 2021

BPC proudly presents Matt Emmett, of Forgotten Heritage Photography, with "Rediscovering Our Forgotten Heritage".
After a chance encounter with a jet engine testing establishment, Matt was drawn into the world of abandoned photography, becoming hooked on the fascinating backstories and atmospheric sense of place and history at the locations he visited. Capturing and bringing these stories into peoples' homes via his social channels has evolved into a nine-year-long project titled, "Forgotten Heritage". From the crumbling shells of Italy’s abandoned villas and asylums to the raw spectacle of Belgium’s rusting industrial remnants, immense and powerful beauty is revealed in the images he brings back from places long forgotten by humans. The images, although produced primarily as art, also form an important collection with regard to the visual preservation of our built environment and heritage. Many of the places Matt has captured have since been demolished.

Matt was awarded Architectural Photographer of the Year in 2016 and Historic Photographer of the Year in 2017. His work has appeared in galleries across England and has been featured in My Modern Met - https://mymodernmet.com/matt-emmett-abandoned-places-photos/ - and his first book, "Forgotten Heritage", is available in bookstores and online: https://www.amazon.com/Forgot.../dp/2361951622/ref=sr_1_1...

By John Benigno

John A. Benigno with "When Photography Becomes Art"

July 26, 2021

Continuing earlier Club discussions, in "When Photography Becomes Art", John A. Benigno will explore what it is that distinguishes fine art photography from a picture that merely records a moment in time. Photography is billed as the most democratic of art forms, and with millions of photographs taken every day, it is hard to dispute this. So, how does a photographer separate their work from the lucky snapshooter? If the snapshooter has access to the same tools that make their images technically indistinguishable from the photographic artist, then what is the difference?

John's work has been exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Sales and Rental Gallery, the Magidson Gallery in New York City, the Chestnut Hill Gallery, and the Print Center in Philadelphia.
It has been collected by the Berman Museum, the Woodmere Museum, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Lancaster Museum, The Noyes Museum, the Harry Ransom Center, and the State Museum of Pennsylvania. Recently, my “Adobe Church Project” was awarded a grant from the Luminous Endowment for Photography. John's photographs also have been accepted into numerous juried exhibits, and his "Chappy Cabanas and Edgartown Light" was on loan to the American Embassy in Kuwait, as part of the State Department’s Art in Embassies program.

Richard Lewis with "Photographing the New Jersey Pinelands"

May 10, 2021

BPC proudly presents Richard Lewis with "Photographing the New Jersey Pinelands: Our Wilderness Next Door". This presentation will provide information on Rich's compositional tool kit which he developed over 30+ years of photographing the New Jersey Pinelands. This kit is ideal for landscape photographers working in local environments that lack iconic, easy-to photograph features like snow-capped mountains and deep valleys with raging waterfalls. Rich will give you seven proven tools to help you compose and shoot beautiful landscapes in just about any location. (Please note that Rich will be appearing virtually, but members are welcome to come to Silver Lake Nature Center to watch his presentation together.)

Rich is an active photography blogger, lecturer, and instructor, who conducts workshops in the New Jersey Pine Barrens to help photographers find their unique creative voice. He will be publishing "Photographing the New Jersey Pine Barrens, A Complete Photography Guide" in mid-2021.

“Photography as Fine Art” with Arik Gorban

April 26, 2021

BPC presents Arik Gorban with "Photography as Fine Art," a presentation focusing on Fine-Art Photography (FAP). It defines FAP and discusses the range of interpretations of what FAP is. Attendees will learn the characteristics that are common to all the definitions and the ones that vary, and they will see what the photography masters say about photography. To illustrate the ideas presented, we’ll look at images that tell stories and are meaningful, thought-provoking, and expressive. The images cover a range of work from pioneer color photography artists to contemporary street and fine-art photographers. We’ll look at photographs that are not usually seen in camera clubs but are displayed in museums and high-end fine-art galleries. We’ll learn how to look beyond the obvious subject in the picture and see what it represents.

Arik, a past president of the Somerset County Photography Club, is a photographer and photography instructor who focuses on the creative aspects of the photographic art form. He has over 40 years of experience in the complete photographic process, including analog photography, darkroom work, and extensive digital imaging.

Arik is the recipient of numerous awards in photo contests and his work has been published in the US and internationally. Arik’s photographs have been displayed in multiple exhibits in the Alfa Art Gallery, as well as in other galleries and libraries in New Jersey. “On Judging” with Henry Rowan

March 8, 2021

BPC is proud to present Henry Rowan with "On Judging". Will your image get a 6 or a 9? Will it win or get tossed out in the first round? Does a judge want to see work similar to his/her own or something totally different? Why are photography judges always wrong? How you get your photography to be recognized for its excellence and scored well, whether in a club setting or an international competition, is one of the most perplexing issues of our time. It ranks right up there with Chaos Theory as a subject that is hard to grasp! During his presentation, Henry will talk about a wide range of factors that can influence how your images are received by judges, and then you will have the opportunity to see just how hard and unpredictable judging can be!

Henry is a national award-winning photographer and the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Center for Photography (PCP) in Doylestown. Henry's work is often on display in art galleries and shows, and he also appears as a frequent lecturer and judge throughout the region.

Photographically, Henry's style is well defined but somewhat difficult to describe. He plays with movement, light, and color in unison to create images that are easy to identify as his. The driving theme of his work is his concept of Non-Existent Imagery, or images that "never existed and never will exist." Henry says, "Unlike the photojournalist, I am not trying to capture a moment in time, but rather I am hoping to create a feeling in space that conveys the essence of the subject." Regardless of the scene, Henry strives to reveal the essence of his subjects in a manner that is as unique as the subjects themselves.

Long Drink - By Buddy Eleazer

Long Drink - By Buddy Eleazer

Taking a photo is easy if you understand the basics such as f-stops, shutter speed and ISO and some of the basic framing conventions such as the rule of thirds. The challenge is learning how to go beyond merely a ‘photo’ to creating an image that has impact. In this talk, Buddy will review his techniques for going beyond the ‘safe shot’. Buddy will discuss his step wise methodology to optimize your time with wildlife. These techniques include capturing the sense of place, getting great animal portraits, shooting for details and using creative techniques such as rim lighting, strong side lighting and pan shots to take your image to the next level.

Buddy Eleazer is an international award-winning landscape and wildlife photographer living in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Buddy may be best known for his African wildlife photography, and he regularly leads groups to southern Africa. To date, Buddy has led over four dozen trips to Africa, with a focus on South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia. In a typical year, Buddy takes 3 or 4 trips to Africa, and has developed a close relationship with guides, rangers and lodge owners. This ‘insider’s view’ of Africa provides him with a unique perspective for a photographer on safari. Buddy also frequently gives talks to camera clubs in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania and also judges photo competitions for organizations in these areas.

Buddy’s images also have been featured by UK Daily Mail, UK Mirror, MSN News, Popular Photography and National. Geographic.
